Reception had some special visitors this morning, great eggcitement as they welcomed our new hens into class. Lots of the children saw the chicks during hatching so they were really interested to see how much they’d grown. They were surprised by how big they are now despite being only 4 months old. The children learned about our Silkie hens, that they originate from China and can have 7 or 8 toes on each foot! Though they have classic wing feathers, their bodies are covered in fluffy down, even as adult birds, so they don’t like getting wet. They are very docile and like being handled. The two black hens are still light enough to be able to fly short distances so they explored the home corner and even Miss Townes computer, the children thought this was very funny. Through their Forest School sessions the children will learn how to look after the hens so that they remain strong and healthy. Soon we should start being able to enjoy some eggs too.
