Covid-19: Head Teacher Update

Dear parents/carers,

We all hope that families have had an enjoyable, safe and relaxing time over half term.  Having been able to recharge batteries, we are happy to see children returning today with smiles on their faces, happy to see their friends and teachers.

As you will know, the Government made announcements last week in relation to the further easing of restrictions, with an aim to move towards society eventually running as normal.  This will be something that we, as a school, will be looking to work towards as we very much want to be able to engage with our wider community with greater flexibility.

However, it is important to be clear that there is still specific guidance for schools in relation to how we manage infections and suspected cases.

Although there has been a lot of general information shared via media indicating changes, schools’ guidance has not changed in how we are to manage the site and minimise the risk of Covid-19 spreading.

How do schools reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission on the site?

Staff and children in school are supported through the following:

• Regular handwashing
• Staggered breaks/lunches
• Staff wearing face covering in communal areas
• Regular cleaning of the environment
• Air circulation and monitoring of CO₂

How are schools managing infections?

• If a child has anyone of the main symptoms of Covid-19 (high temperature, new cough, loss of sense of taste/smell) they should isolate and have a PCR test organised.
• If a child tests positive on a PCR or LFD, they must isolate at home. They can be tested with LFD tests on Day 5 and Day 6, where they will require two consecutive negative tests before returning to school.

At this point, it is still important for everyone to understand that Covid-19 can still be transmitted and that schools are venues with a high concentration of people in one place, which needs to be managed.  These systems follow current Government guidance and Gateshead Health & Safety advice which we will adapt when new guidance is provided.

With better weather and higher levels of vaccination, we have a lot to be optimistic about in the coming weeks, as we move towards normality.  In the meantime, your support and understanding is greatly appreciated.
