Discovering World War II

This term, Year 6 have been learning all about World War II, exploring some of the key events and changes that shaped Britain during the war.

We began by investigating the causes of World War II, before exploring what life was like for people who lived through it. We discovered how the roles of men and women changed during the war, with many people taking on new responsibilities and jobs to support the war effort.

We also learned about conscription, when men were required to join the armed forces, and explored the experiences of conscientious objectors – people who refused to fight because of their beliefs. We also discovered the important contribution of the Women's Land Army, whose members worked on farms to help keep the country supplied with food.

To develop our speaking and performance skills, we studied Winston Churchill's famous wartime speeches. We then wrote and performed our own speeches, thinking carefully about how Churchill used language, repetition and powerful vocabulary to inspire and reassure the British people.

It has been fantastic to see Year 6 developing their historical knowledge while also building their confidence as writers, speakers and performers.
