This week in Nursery the children have focused on pirates. They started this week by entering the classroom with a pirate hat, eye patch and treasure map left on the floor and a missing treasure chest. This led to lots of lovely discussions about who may have been in our classroom and why they think that and resulted in the children using the treasure map and clues to find our missing treasure chest. Most of the children decided they believe it was a pirate, so the children talked about what they already know about pirates and how they could catch the pirate. After that, lots of the children decided to use tea bags to stain the paper to make their own treasure map. The children have also talked about how pirates are often on ships for a long time and talked about what they would miss from home and what they would need to take with them if they went on a long voyage. The children talked about the importance of ensuring they had enough food and water, so they made their own sandwiches using bread, butter, jam and/or cheese. This week the children have also learned about famous pirates, such as William Kidd and Anne Bonney. In the creative area, the children have enjoyed making paper plate pirates and decorating party hats and parrots. In the outside area, the children have practised walking the plank and in the writing area the children have enjoyed using feathers to mark make in the sand. During PE, the children continued to practise their balancing and were then split into 2 teams and had to collect all the treasure and add it into their team’s hoop. The team with the most treasure in at the end of the game was the winner.
