Harvest Festival
As a school we celebrated Harvest, linking with World Food Day on 16th October, to collect non-perishable foods for those who are less fortunate. Harvest Festival celebrates the time of year when crops have been gathered from the field and people can reflect on they food that they have. This year we raised donations to sent to Gateshead Foodbank.
Gateshead Foodbank
Gateshead foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust’s network of 428 foodbanks, working to tackle food poverty and hunger in our local communities, as well as across the UK. The foodbank is ran by a team of volunteers who are not paid for their work. They currently operate three distribution centres across Gateshead – Gateshead Town Centre, Blaydon and Birtley.
Every day, people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks becoming the main providers in times of need.
Harlow Green’s Impact
Due to the kind contributions from the Harlow Green school community, we have been able to collect a variety of food which will be shared with those in need over the cold autumn and winter months. Your donations were collected by volunteers from Gateshead foodbank, who were blown away with the vast amount we have collected. The Rights Respect Group helped pack away the all of the donations into the collection van. As they say, ‘many hands make light work’ and so with a great team effort the job was done quickly and efficiently.
As a community, we managed to collect 372.88kg of non-perishable foods!
A huge thank you to all who have donated; every tin and box will make a difference in the lives of people who are part of our wider community.
