The week the children have focused on pets in Nursery. The children started this week by finding out what a pet is and listening to two stories called ‘The Perfect Pet’ & ‘Mog and the v.e.t’. This then led to the children discussing what pets they have at home/would like to have and sharing ways of caring for pets i.e. giving them food, exercise and water. They also saw a picture of Miss Bloomfield’s dog called Bella and found out about how she cares for her dog. On Tuesday the children then found a pretend puppy outside with some items and a letter asking for their help. They were challenged to identify which items the dog would need to stay healthy and which items he would not need. The children also discussed where different animals live i.e. a fish in a water tank and a rabbit in a hutch and then some children tried to make their own animal homes out of junk modelling. Throughout the week, the children also explored their new vet role play area and sang ‘How much is that doggy in the Window?’ and ‘My dog, Ben’. Later this week, the children also learned the names of baby animals i.e. that a dog is called a puppy when it is first born. In the creative area, lots of children chose to use their fingers to paint the spots on Dalmatian dogs and the scales on the fish. In the water tray, the children discussed the different sea creatures that live in the sea and in the writing area, the children practised writing names on the collar tags. During PE the children have practised different animal movements.
