This week in Nursery the children have continued with their ‘under the sea’ topic. They started this week by listening to a story called ‘The Singing Mermaid’ and receiving a letter from Marissa the Mermaid. The mermaid challenged them to investigate which material (out of card, paper, bubble wrap, cotton wool or tissue paper) would be the best to mend Marrissa’s mermaid tail so that it becomes waterproof again. This week the children also talked about what mermaids may struggle with, how they would feel if they were a mermaid and what they would like to be when they are older. Due to the gorgeous weather, this week we have spent a lot of time in the outside area. The children have enjoyed playing on the space hoppers, making meals in the mud kitchen and painting mermaids on the windows. In the role play area, the children have continued to enjoy playing in the pirate ship and our new under the sea cafe. Lots of children have also decorated their own mermaid tail using glue, feathers and sequins and coloured in different beach related images. In the mathematics area, the children have further developed their knowledge on 2D shapes by matching the correct 2D shapes to make a range of under the sea pictures. In the sandpit, the children were challenged to dig for the hidden coin with their initial letter of their name on and in the playdough area, the children were encouraged to make prints and patterns by pressing shells into the playdough.
