This week in Nursery the children have focused on Summer. The children have discovered that Summer officially starts on Wednesday 21st June and that in the Summer the weather is usually warmer and sunnier and lots of people go on holidays, which is something we will focus on within the next few weeks. They also talked about how people may wear different clothes in the summer to keep cool and may need certain items to protect themselves from the sunshine. This may mean wearing a t-shirt, sunglasses, sun caps, and sun cream, drinking more water to stay hydrated and having a fan or staying in shade to keep cool. This led to the children picking out appropriate clothing and items to protect the doll from the sunshine in the summer and an appropriate outfit for the doll to wear in the winter. Lots of children also then decided to make their own fans during child-initiated learning time to keep themselves cool. This week the children also learned about the signs of Summer and went a walk around the field to spot any signs of Summer and identify how they are different from other seasons, such as Autumn or Winter. Later this week, the children also talked about their favourite Summer activities and their favourite activities they like to do with their father’s or a special person linked to Father’s Day. The children then talked about how they could make that person feel happy and made a card for them. While accessing the outdoor area, the children have enjoyed dipping their feet into the water trays to cool themselves down and playing the ‘stand on a shadow’ game, where children try to jump on their friend’s shadows as they run around. In the playdough area, the children have enjoyed making their own ice creams by using the scopes to fill up ice cream corns and tubs with playdough and then they have enjoyed decorating them with sprinkles. In the water area, the children have liked using the different sized boats to transport the small world people to the other side of the water tray. During PE, the children have started to practise their races for their Sports Day.
