To launch Year One’s new English book, “Stone Girl, Bone Girl”, this week we all pretended to be Mary Anning – the most famous British Palaeontologist from Lyme Regis.
First we discussed what tools and equipment a fossil finder would need. The children had so many wonderful suggestions including a chisel, magnifying glass and brushes. Next we searched through a tray of sand to try to find fossils and bones that were hidden. We talked about how we needed to dig the sand carefully as fossils and bones are delicate and can easily break. We compared this to Mary Anning and how it took her days of painstaking excavation to unearth her famous discovery – an ichthyosaurus.
