Since coming back after Christmas, the children in Year 6 have been practising their performance skills in gymnastics. They have studied routines by famous gymnasts in the Olympics and discussed the different elements of travelling, balancing and jumping.
Each week, they have then focussed on one of these elements and have considered how to advance their skills. It has been really pleasing to see them moving out of their comfort zone to try things like headstands and dive forward rolls on a bench. We have thought about how to keep a balance rigid and holding it for five seconds and the importance, when travelling, of how our movements should be controlled.
Over the next few weeks, the children are looking forward to combining their skills to produce a polished routine in time with some music.
