This week, Year 6 were lucky to be visited by Chef Nick Fairley, who worked with them to create two healthy dishes from America. He also talked to them about the possibilities that are open to children who enjoy cooking and his career path to becoming a chef, an educator and to owning his own cookery school in Jesmond.
The children studied America as a superpower as part of their ‘How Precious Life Is’ topic and this inspired Nick to look at some American recipes, but to add a twist and to teach the children the importance of a healthy diet too. The children were all happy at the thought of making a spaghetti bolognaise, but were a little bit less certain making cheeseburger soup. It was lovely to see the children chopping, dicing and slicing to prepare the ingredients and then eagerly awaiting the final outcome. Both dishes were a tremendous success and I think many of the children were surprised at how much they liked the soup.
Nick runs curry classes for families and groups. If you would be interested in this, please contact school and we can pass on his details.
