Visualising shape is a tricky area of maths – sometimes children are just able to see how a net will be folded, or a reflection has happened, but sometimes it’s about having the chance to be practical and find out!
In this investigation, the children were given parts of different nets to create shapes and they had to work out how to put them together and then say which shape had been created. The investigation led to brilliant discussions between the children where their language was excellent. It allowed them to use their kinaesthetic learning skills and to experiment and be wrong and work out why. In the end, all of the children were successful – even if they didn’t manage to pair up all of the nets.
