Co-ordinates

In maths, over the last two weeks, the children in Year 6 have been working on co-ordinates and translating and reflecting shapes.

They have worked with co-ordinates in all four quadrants, considering when the co-ordinate needs to be positive or negative and have used the principle, ‘along the corridor and up/down the stairs’ to help them remember the x co-ordinate comes first and the y second. Once the children had mastered reading and plotting co-ordinates, they translated shapes on the co-ordinate grids, which means to move them about following given instructions. The final piece of learning involved reflection. The children learnt to reflect shapes in the x and y axis and also found lines of symmetry within shapes. Using mirrors, helped the children with this concept; their knowledge of the co-ordinates also helped them to do this accurately. For the last lesson of the unit, the children solved a range of problems related to this learning, some of these were very challenging and an excellent effort was made with them by all of the children.
