Evacuation Day!

This week saw the launch of our class text ‘Friend or Foe’ by Michael Morpurgo – and the children were in for a surprise when a siren led to them being taken on an air raid into a shelter and then preparing for evacuation to Devon!

The book links to our topic on ‘Peacekeepers’ and is set during the Second World War. During our launch, children were given identity tags and evacuated from the building. One child acted as the air-raid warden and another took her suitcase and gas mask ready for the train journey. Once outside, clues were revealed from the suitcase about the characters and the text, so that the children could make predictions and begin discussions about what they will be reading over the coming weeks. They have then worked extremely hard over the week to explore the opening and think about how the two boys in the story felt as they left home in London for the countryside.
