One Day on Our Blue Planet

This week, in English, Year Two found out that they will be reading One Day on Our Blue Planet: In the Ocean, written by Ella Bailey.

To launch their new text the children made a wax resist – a piece of artwork created using oil pastels and watercolour paint. The boys and girls were each given an animal to draw, including a dolphin, manta ray, blue whale, turtle and jellyfish.

To begin, the children drew the outline of their animal in pencil and then added colour using oil pastels. Once they had completed their drawing, they painted over it using watercolour paint. The children had to remember to keep dipping their paintbrush in the water so the paint wasn’t too dark or thick. When they had finished, the children could see that the animal appeared to be swimming in water.

The children were then asked where all of the animals lived. The boys and girls were quick to realise that all of these creatures live in the ocean.

Finally, the book was revealed. The children can’t wait to find out more about what happens on our blue planet.
