World War Two

Over the last couple of weeks, the children in Year 6 have been studying the history part of our topic learning about World War Two.

To begin with, the children considered the causes of the war, sorting them into long term and short term causes. They were surprised to learn that there were several different causes not just Hitler and Germany. Even more surprising, was the role the British had in causing war by failing to be prepared.

After this, the children learnt about how World War Two affected society, comparing the changes in men’s and women’s lives. The children learnt about conscription for the men and the impact this also had on women. Following this, the children produced their own Horrible History page about the impact the war had on women with some excellent and attractive results. For their final piece of work in this unit, the children wrote speeches from the point of view of Winston Churchill. These pieces of writing were fantastic and reflected the children’s excellent level of effort.
