Campfire Cooking

In Year 4 this week, before heading out to the Forest School, the children took part in a Fire Quiz in class. They had a good understanding of safe fire preparation and management including explaining upwind and downwind. Understanding wind direction and terrain can be complicated but should inform their choices when siting and managing a fire as well as safe fuel storage. Then we headed outside where they could practice with flints and steels, this time onto cotton wool but also onto wood shavings. These are much harder to ignite so patience is key.

Meanwhile some other children laid and set light to the campfire, then prepared the food. Miss Rowe cooked caramelised bananas as an end of term treat. It’s amazing to see how many children will eat fruits and vegetables cooked on a campfire that they wouldn’t entertain eating at home. Very sticky fingers but also very happy faces and full tummies. The children took the photos for this session.

The Risk Principle: Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
