The Great North Museum

Earlier this week, the boys and girls in Year 3 had the fantastic opportunity to visit The Great North Museum. They spent time exploring the Egyptian gallery looking at the exhibits about Egyptian life and the Afterlife. They completed a ‘crack the code’ and an ‘object eye spy’ activity, working as a team to locate and name ten artefacts within the gallery and were fascinated by the two mummified women, Bakt en Hor and Irtyru.  The workshop, led by museum staff, gave the children a greater insight into these two mummified people. During the workshop, the children looked at x-rays, photographs and a 3D replica skull which had been created using a CT scan. They discussed the pros and cons of displaying mummified people in a museum and recapped their learning about the mummification process by giving it a go themselves; removing organs from a ‘body’ to be placed in canopic jars. During the visit, we also launched our new English text, ‘The Ancient Egypt Sleepover’. The children were keen to listen to the first chapter and it sparked lots of discussion as it is set in a museum.
