This week has been poetry week across the whole school. Year 6 have studied poems by John Agard and discussed the messages and meanings. They particularly enjoyed trying to perform sections of his poems in a similar style to the way he had performed for an audience.
After this, the children wrote two poems of their own. The first was an Ottova Rima poem. This Italian form of poetry has 8 lines, 10 syllables per line and follows an ABABABCC rhyming pattern. The children found it tricky to follow all of the rules but really persevered to create a poem that followed the structure and gave a message about poppies and the importance of remembrance. The second poem was free verse about life in the trenches and it allowed children to use their creative side – filling lines with powerful vocabulary and imagery.
