This term, Year Two have been learning about habitats in Science. Did you know a habitat is where an animal or a plant lives?
First, the children found out about some different habitats around the world. They learnt about the ocean, deserts, rainforests and polar habitats and some of the animals and plants that live there. They also discovered that some animals have special adaptations which make them more suited to a particular habitat. They then worked in groups to sort animals according to which habitat they can be found in.
The boys and girls also leant about microhabitats. These are very small parts of a habitat such as under a log or in the grass. They found out that many minibeasts live in microhabitats and identified which minibeasts prefer different microhabitats.
After that, the children made bug hotels to help minibeasts. First, they collected dry leaves from the school grounds. Next, they rolled paper into tubes to create small spaces for the minibeasts to live in. These tubes were placed into a paper cup and leaves were added to make the ‘rooms’ of the bug hotels cosier. Finally, the children took their bug hotels home to put in their gardens. They were very excited to help out the wildlife in their local area. The children also wrote instructions to explain how they had made their bug hotels, thinking carefully about each step.
