Reading is such a powerful tool. We talk to the children a lot about how it can open doors to other worlds and allow them to use their imagination. Reading can also be used to help promote diversity and the world around us, acceptance of others and a greater understanding of our place in society.
The range of books available at all ages that promote diversity is huge. In this month’s reading corner, I have recommended ones that help us to think about cultural diversity and characters of different ethnicities. As the nights draw in, it’s perfect weather for snuggling up and reading a book and discussing what can be learnt from it.
EYFS – I Love Me: A fantastic book that teaches the importance of celebrating the best of being yourself. Also really useful for teaching the days of the week.
KS1 – Hair Love: This is a lovely story showcasing a tender father-daughter relationship and encouraging young readers to love the hair they have just as much as Zuri does.
Lower KS2 – The Marvellous Granny Jinks and Me: Inspired by the true story of Jenny Mayers – the first Black woman to be accepted into the Magic Circle. A book brimming with warmth, tricks and magic.
Upper KS2 – Last Girl In: A great sport themed book, set in Jamaica, where a girl will not let anything stand in her way of her love for cricket.
