Oh Christmas Tree! Oh Christmas Tree!

Reception have been learning about deciduous and evergreen trees. We looked in detail at different types of Christmas trees, the children looked closely at each branch, needle and cone. They noticed each branch often ends in a woody bud, that some have longer softer needles but others can be quite short and spiky. The cones come in all shapes and sizes too and they change as they dry out. We then compared pine and spruce needles to flat broad leaves and took part in a Woodland Trust sorting quiz. Some of our children could remember from nursery the different leaf characteristics, including that, though holly does not have needles it is actually evergreen.

The children then used their observation skills to draw either full or parts of Christmas trees. You can see their work on display in our school entrance.

The Nature Principle: Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
