All About Advent

This week, Year Two have been learning all about Advent, a time when Christians prepare for the birth of Jesus.

Did you know the word Advent (Adventus) means the arrival of something important? The children found out that Advent marks the start of the Christian year and it begins on the Sunday closest to 30th November. Advent ends at midnight on Christmas Eve.

The boys and girls found out that Christians use a wreath to prepare for Jesus’ birth. The wreath is a circle of evergreen branches to remind Christians that God does not change. There are also five candles which represent the light of God. During Advent, a candle is lit each Sunday and the fifth candle is lit on Christmas Day.

The children created their very own Advent wreath using tissue paper to represent the evergreen branches. They then coloured each candle either pink or purple to symbolise peace, love, joy and hope. The boys and girls left the fifth candle white as this is lit as celebration of Jesus’ birth.
