After the children played some bird identification games, where they had to find birds from name only rather than images, the children were encouraged to build some Mega-nests. First as a whole class, then in teams. They could only use fir trees and they had to make sure all team mates were off the ground. They loved this activity and tried different ideas until they finalised their nest. They then had to try and bird watch and identify birds without binoculars. Looking for size, colour, flight patterns and orientation to help narrow down which bird they might be watching.
The trees offer a good bouncy warm base which is useful if you are sitting still for long periods during the birdwatch.
The Nature Principle: Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
