This week, the children in Year 5 have been writing sentence stackers in preparation for their next piece of writing.
Today, the children were introduced to the language feature similes. The children learnt that similes compare something to something else using the words ‘as’ or ‘like’.
After identifying some similes in a paragraph, the children were given some simile cards, including similes such as ‘as hot as’, ‘as cold as’, and ‘as big as’. The children then thought of ideas which would match these similes and came up with some great ideas – some even relating to The Explorer book!
Then, to extend their ideas, the children generated sentence openers and even began extending their similes with subordinate clauses, using words like ‘because’ to further their sentences.
This practice will be beneficial on Monday when their continue their lessons, focusing on writing sentences using similes.
