Wonderful Weaving!

For the past two weeks, the Year One children have completed their Design and Technology block, with a focus on weaving.

Our project is to design, make and evaluate a table mat. The week started with conducting some research about table mats. The children were able to look at table mats and say what materials they thought they were made from and what their purpose was. The pupils learnt that a table mat is used to protect a table from getting food or heat stains. Some of the children said that they have table mats at home on their dining table.  Next we all had a go at weaving and went outside to weave ribbon and fabric through the MUGA fence.  This was very tricky but so much fun! The children soon learnt to go in and out, and then out and in to make a pattern. Then we had a go at weaving some felt.  It was tricky but we persevered. Our final project is to design and then make a table mat. Before making our animal shaped table mats, we designed them and talked about what equipment we would need.  Finally we started weaving our table mats out of paper.  The children could choose what animal they wanted to make – an owl, a fish, a butterfly or a tortoise. The children had to learn to weave in and out of the paper template. Although it was rather difficult, the results are fantastic.  Take a look at our amazing weaving!
