This week, Year 6 have been putting their culinary skills to the test as they have made vegetable pasties in the air fryers.
There was great excitement in both Year 6 classrooms as the children were given the chance to peel, chop, slice and dice a range of vegetables to create their own pasty. During history, children discovered that the miners used to take pasties as a snack as they could fit in a pocket easily and the folded shape helped to keep them warm. The children then designed their own pasty from a choice of vegetables including potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, sweetcorn, onion, peas. Many of them decide to finish off the pasty with some cheese. It was lovely to see the co-operation between the children – some even volunteering to help washing up.
Preparing children for adulthood is extremely important at Harlow Green and the ability to prepare and cook food safely is a skill the children all need to develop. They were extremely impressed with the end result and we know that many of them are wanting to make pasties themselves at home.
