Flavours of South America

Exploring South American Flavours in Design Technology

This week in Design Technology, students had a hands-on experience exploring the vibrant flavours of South American cuisine! As part of our food technology module, we learned how to make three delicious and traditional dishes: guacamole, salsa, and homemade tortilla chips.

We started by preparing the guacamole, mashing ripe avocados and mixing them with fresh ingredients like lime juice, tomatoes, onions, and a touch of seasoning. The result? A smooth, creamy dip bursting with flavour!

Next, we made a fresh salsa using diced tomatoes, spring onions, coriander and a squeeze of lime. Some students even added a bit of spice for an extra kick!

Finally, we crafted crispy, golden tortilla chips by cutting and baking tortillas until they were perfectly crunchy. To make them even more exciting, we experimented with different flavours, including Salted, Peri Peri, Chilli, Garlic, and Paprika. Each flavour added its own twist, from the fiery heat of chilli to the smoky richness of paprika. These chips were perfect for scooping up our homemade guacamole and salsa!

In addition to our cooking, we had a very special moment in class this week. After watching Dragon’s Den, we were thrilled to receive a personal video from entrepreneur Sara Davies! She shared an inspiring message with our students, encouraging them to explore their creativity, develop their skills, and consider exciting career paths in business, design, and beyond. It was an amazing opportunity to hear from a successful entrepreneur and think about how our own ideas could grow into something big!
