It’s a forest….where nothing’s as it seems!
This week, the children had the amazing opportunity to enjoy an opera – The Vanishing Forest – written specifically for primary children based around the characters from Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.
The English Touring Opera were visiting the North East and we managed to get a performance for the morning – where we learned all about Puck’s adventure to save the woods. With a great underlying tale about saving our natural environment, school has also received dozens of saplings from the Woodlands Trust to plant in the grounds this term.
The puppets, costume changes, live musicians and singing and acting had the children mesmerized and they loved singing along with the songs we had learned to join in with!
This forms part of our drive to give the children a chance to see more live music, and an opera is certainly a change. Thanks to the team from ETO who also took time afterwards to talk to the children about different careers and pathways into opera and performance related jobs. We were also joined by the script writer of the performance too.
Year 6 will be using some of the provided lesson plans in the summer term.
