In Science we have been looking at solids, liquids and gases and we finished off the work with an experiment to see if we can weigh a gas.
Throughout the term we have looked at the particle structure of solids, liquids and gases and how this affects their properties. We also added in some work on the water cycle and its continuous process of evaporation, condensation and rain fall.
This week, we conducted an experiment to see if we could actually measure gas. We took a cup of fizzy pop or water, weighed it, stirred it for a long time, then weighed it again – all whilst trying not to spill it over the table!
All our cups changed weight – dropping 1-3g and proving that by removing some of the gas we had reduced the weight of the contents. This did also prompt the question as to how the gas had a weight, because it floated up and disappeared, so wouldn’t that actually make the cup lighter!
