Geography galore at Wharton Park, Durham.

Year 4 have enjoyed an in depth and extensive study of mountains this term in Geography, both in their formation and their uses.  To finish off our topic, we took a trip to the hilliest park we could find – Wharton Park in Durham – our version of a mini-mountain!

After last year’s wet and windy day, this year we had glorious sunshine and lovely weather.  In the park, we took part in some orienteering and compass work, run by Durham County Council Park Rangers, and during the day we also did some art based work on perspectives and hill uses around the city and photography looking at the way humans have changed the hillside to adapt it for their use.  Our binoculars helped us see even further and we had a short amount of time to enjoy playing on the equipment.

We had a great time and are certainly ready for a rest!  We enjoyed lunch sat out in the park and it was exciting to visit somewhere new, watching the trains travel in and out the station and look at the views across the city – noting all the ways the hills are used such as for defence, farming and building.
