Tree recognition can be tricky, so many varieties and so difficult to remember new names. This activity helps the children begin to recognise and match, shape, colour and textures. First each child was given a collecting bag, then into the woods we go to find their favourite leaf shape. They collected enough leaves to represent members of their families. Back in class they drew faces on each leaf and arranged them on paper, labelling each family member. Some included a different leaf variety to represent pets.
Once they had completed their picture they matched their leaves to ones on the tree identification chart and named their tree. Whether the wobbly oak leaves or star shaped sycamore, this activity introduces new and unusual vocabulary to the children and encourages a relationship with the world around them.
Principle 2: Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
