The Tension Mounts.

Year 6 children, who are already confident applying a timber hitch, now attempted to add tension to lines they have created. Without tension the line won’t support weight, whether a climbing human or tarp when shelter building, a slack rope will effect the integrity of the timber hitch and create safety issues.

Adding tension is not easy, especially for children who may not have a lot of upper body strength. The solution is to work as a team, using body weight to apply tension whilst the other person makes a hitch. This process is repeated until the right amount of tension is applied.

Meanwhile other children continued to collect leaves for mulching and worked on our Foresty Christmas trees that will soon be hung at the front of the school.

Principle 4: Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
