This week in Reception, it has been all things Winter!
The children have been reading the story ‘Lost and Found’ as part of our Literacy and Topic learning. This story tells of a boy who finds a penguin at his front door and he takes the penguin on a journey back to the South Pole as he thinks he is lost. However, the penguin and the boy realise at the end of the story that they are both just lonely and in need of a friend! Through this story we have looked what we would need to pack in a suitcase if we travelled to the South Pole, discussed what the weather would be like and painted pictures of penguins.
Science
The children found that some of their water toys had been frozen and were stuck in a block of ice! We discussed with our partners what could have happened to them and how we could get them out. The children knew that for water to freeze it had to be cold (like putting it in the freezer) and to get the ice to melt we needed to warm it back up. The children experimented by putting the ice blocks on the radiator to melt the ice quickly and save the animals.
Key vocabulary: melting, freezing, experiment, South Pole, Antarctica.
