This half-term, the children in Year 6 have been exploring Cubist and Realist artwork. They have studied artists including Matisse, Picasso, Gainsborough, Modigliani and Schnabel for inspiration and have seen the different approaches they have taken to producing portraits. They really enjoyed on-line drawing workshops about how to draw realistic eyes and mouths and it was brilliant to see so many children practising these skills at home. For their final piece, they had to combine the skills they had been taught. This involved creating some distortion; including colourful collage work; and inicorporating realistic eyes (although they may have been in a different position.) The final results were excellent – we definitely have some artists in our midst.
