Our new text in English this term, is the classic children’s novel ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. During our first reading week, the children began by making predictions about the story based on different versions of the book’s front cover. They identified clues given by the title, characters and setting featured on the covers. As the novel is rich in interesting and powerful language, the children identified a selection of interesting vocabulary choices, wrote definitions, founds synonyms and discussed what images these words created for the reader. Next, the children inferred character’s feelings based on their actions at different points. During our first writing week, the children have practiced using prepositional phrases and adverbs at the beginning of their sentences as a way of making their writing more varied. They then used these skills to write a short description of the Iron Man and his actions from the first chapter of the story.
