In English this week, we have launched our new text ‘Until I Met Dudley’. It is very different to any of our previous texts, as it is part fiction and part fact. It tells the story of a girl who has very unusual ideas about how everyday objects work, but then meets a dog called Dudley who explains how they really work. The children began by studying two different front covers and making predictions about what type of book it could be. This then raised many questions which the children recorded on post-it notes to hopefully answer as we work through the text in class. We started looking at the pages about the girl’s unusual ideas which the children found highly amusing and engaging. They chose their favourite idea and explained why they liked it, then wrote their explanations on strips of paper to share with the class. The most popular idea was that there is a dragon living under your house that toasts your bread with its fiery breath. As the text also contains some unfamiliar vocabulary, the children have used dictionaries and thesaurus’ to find definitions and synonyms for some of these words. A highlight of this activity was to revisit their knowledge of the alphabet by learning a new alphabet song.
