This week Year One have been practising their artistic talents. Closely linked to our theme, “We’re all going on a summer holiday”, the pupils have been observing, drawing and sculpting shells. Firstly, we investigated patterns on a variety of shells and sketched them using pencils. The children tried their best to add shade and tone to their pictures. We also discovered that the artist Georgia O’Keefe had also painted shells and we tried to recreate her work using oil pastels. Another artist we studied was the sculptor Marc Quinn. We learnt that he sculpted enormous models of shells using bronze and other metals. The children used clay to sculpt a smaller version of a shell. They added texture and patterns to their creations.
