Leaf Bashing

Nursery and Reception children have been learning about different leaf shapes particularly focusing on tree leaves. This activity encourages the children to really observe in more detail and at the same time they get to enjoy some work with tools.

First they played a leaf recognition game, trying to match the right shape to the description. They then collected leaves from around our site, trying to find a good variety of different shapes. Once they were happy with their collections they laid the leaves out onto paper in a design. Another piece of paper is placed over the top for the “bashing” to begin. They could use a choice of mallets and hammers. As they worked, they learned which leaves and which hammers worked best and then started to experiment by adding coloured petals, seeds and blossoms. A lovely morning making noisy art and learning about trees.

The Long-Term Principle: Forest School is a long-term process of frequent and regular sessions in a woodland or natural environment, rather than a one-off visit. Planning, adaptation, observations and reviewing are integral elements of Forest School.

Article 3: Everyone who works with children should always do what is the best for the child.
