Puzzling Partitioning

This week, in Mathematics, Year Two have been partitioning two-digit numbers. They found out that partitioning means to split a number into smaller parts.

First, the children used base ten apparatus to partition numbers into tens and ones using a part-whole model. They had to think carefully about which number represented the tens and which number represented the ones to make their number accurately. The children then used the part-whole model to help them to write a number sentence.

Next, Year Two learnt how to partition the same number in different ways. Initially they partitioned the number into tens and ones, just as they had done before. To partition the number in a different way, the children then moved one ten from one part to another. They noticed that by doing so they were not adding or removing any tens from the whole, however, they had partitioned the number in a different way. They repeated this process to partition the same number in lots of different ways. This was quite a tricky skill but the children persevered and became more confident over the course of the week.
