Reading is an essential part of Harlow Green’s curriculum. Giving the children to read and understand a text is vital across different curriculum areas, but perhaps what is of more importance is developing a love of reading and an interest in books that will remain with the children for life.
As part of this desire to create life-long readers, we have developed a reading buddy programme throughout school. KS2 children buddy up with a younger child and every half-term they visit them and share a story. It is lovely to see the interaction between the children as they read together and ask questions. The older children are there to model and to assist while the younger children read aloud to them. Walking around school, it is clear that the children enjoy this time and the mutual respect between the children of different ages is clear.
