SafetyWorks! Visit

Being safe, is one of the school’s key rules and, in Year 6, the children get the opportunity to visit SafetyWorks! to consider how they can keep themselves and others safe outside of school and also show responsibility for their actions.

This week, Year 6 were excited to visit SafetyWorks! in Newcastle where they encountered real-life scenarios involving fires, road-safety, peer pressure and water safety. The children had to consider how their actions and decisions could have consequences – especially as they are 10 and therefore of legal age for criminal responsibility. The sessions were all delivered in a fun and interactive way, but with a serious message behind them.

In the Sainsburys, a child was subjected to peer pressure to encourage them to shop-lift and they saw the consequences when they were escorted by the police to the custody suite at the police station. When playing with fireworks, the children saw the dangers of dropping them in a bin and lighting an anti-social fire and how this could then put others in danger.  They also considered why it was sensible to ‘STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK’ before crossing the road and the dangers of swimming in areas where life-guards aren’t present.

The children all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and also had the opportunity to see possible careers that they might be interested in including being in the fire service, police and as life-guards.
