Dodge the Ball!

In PE, Year Two have been learning how to play dodgeball. They learned that dodgeball is played with two opposing teams on either side of the court. There is not one, but two, aims in the game. The first is to eliminate players from the other team, by hitting them with the ball. The second is to avoid being eliminated yourself.

To begin, the children discussed what sportsmanship means and how they could demonstrate this value in their PE lessons. The children had some wonderful ideas including working as team, giving their full effort and supporting others regardless of the result.

During their lessons, the children practised how to hit a target. They rolled and threw the ball to hit a set of cones. After a short while, a points system was introduced. The children tried hard to hit the cone furthest away in order to achieve the most points.

Next, the children learned how to dodge the ball. The boys and girls stood in a circle with one person in the middle. When the ball was thrown to them, the person in the middle would shout either “catch” or “dodge”. The children had to think quickly about what they had been asked to do, trying hard not to confuse the instruction with their actions.

Finally, the children put their skills to the test and competed in a game of dodgeball. They thoroughly enjoyed eliminating players from the opposite team while trying to avoid being hit themselves.
