In DT, Year Two have designed and made a healthy sandwich. They learned about an Incredible Inventor called Ruth Wakefield, who invented the chocolate chip cookie.
For their research, the children compared a cheese salad sandwich and a Nutella sandwich. In order to determine which was healthier, the boys and girls sorted the components of each sandwich onto the Eat Well Plate. They decided that the cheese salad sandwich was healthy because it contained fruits and vegetables, whereas a Nutella sandwich is unhealthy because it is high in fat and sugar.
Next, the children completed a skills lesson. Before preparing any food, Year Two washed their hands, cleaned the tables and tied back their hair to ensure the environment was hygienic. They practised spreading butter and slicing cucumber and peppers. The children cut the ingredients accurately and safely, holding the item steady and cutting away from their body. Once the children had prepared their food, it was time to taste. As well as the peppers and cucumber, the children also tried spinach and lettuce. For many of the children, this was the first time they had eaten these foods and they were pleasantly surprised by their taste.
After that, the children designed their sandwich. The children chose chicken, cheese or ham as their filling as well as two healthy extras – spinach, peppers, cucumber or lettuce. Some children chose to butter their bread, whereas others left it plain. They then sorted their ingredients onto the Eatwell Plate to ensure it was healthy.
After what felt like a long wait, it was time to make their sandwich. The boys and girls used their design sheet to choose the correct ingredients for their product. Once it was assembled, the children were able to enjoy their scrumptious sandwiches.
Finally, the children evaluated their product. They recognised that their sandwich was healthy as it contained some dairy or protein and fruit / vegetables. The children were also able to explain how they had made their sandwich in a safe and hygienic way.
