In preparation for making hand puppets in year 4, the children have been practicing and improving their sewing skills. They have all shown excellent concentration and determination to complete a running stitch and an overcast stitch. The first step was to be able to thread the needle and tie a knot to secure the thread. They then had to make two small stitches to secure the thread to the fabric. Finally, they needed to use the correct technique to complete a running stitch and an overcast stitch to join two pieces of fabric. We already had some accomplished sewers in the class, but everyone was proud of the improvement they made and the new skills they had learnt.
