Grammar focus – Expanded noun phrases

When writing a narrative, description is so important to keep your reader engaged, and help them picture in their minds what is happening. Expanded noun phrases should be used to add more detail to your descriptions. You need to know what they are, and how to use them effectively in your writing.

Writing task

This week, we would like you to write a fairytale, but with a twisted ending! You should use a classic fairy story (things like Snow White, The Princess and the Pea, Sleeping Beauty, etc) and change the ending! You might make it more realistic than the original, or you might change it completely! It’s up to you. Your fairytale should follow the conventions of a narrative, and you can either start your story from the beginning of the original or half way through. There is an example below to show you the type of writing we are looking for!

What I’m Looking For:

A sensible plot that can be followed
Expanded noun phrases to describe both characters and settings
A range of sentence starters and a variation on sentence length
Interesting vocabulary
A twisted ending!

Reading

Children should spend 20 minutes at least three times per week using Reading Plus.

Maths

In maths, we will spend the week focusing on a particular topic, eg. shape or place value. Activities will then be set on Mathletics that are based upon this subject.

Topic – Geometry

Understand how to calculate missing angles on a straight line and around a point; know the names and properties of common polygons and differentiate between regular and irregular polygons.
