English
In English, we will spend one day reading and comprehending a text; one day on spelling, one day completing a short writing activity and one day focusing on Lexia.
Reading and Comprehension – A Magical Muddle
Share the story with your child. Then, discuss the questions from A Magical Muddle Comprehension. There is no need to record your child’s answers. However, if you wish to, a question and answer sheet is provided.
A Magical Muddle Comprehension
Spelling
Learn to spell: so, by, my, your, they, and, has, says. Play Spooky Spellings. Select Year 1, click book 3 and press go.
Writing Task
Read A Magical Muddle. Tabitha is a witch, but her spells don’t always go to plan. Using the words provided, write one sentence to explain what Tabitha looks like and another sentence to explain what she likes to do. You could even use ‘and’ to join words or sentences together.
If you are unable to print the worksheet, you can complete the activity on a piece of paper.
What I’m Looking For:
- Capital letter at the start of each sentence
- Full stop at the end of each sentence
- Use sound mats to help with spelling
- Use ‘and’ to join words or sentences

Reading and Phonics
Children should spend 20 minutes at least three times per week using Lexia. Children should take part in phonics and spelling daily (see Ruth Miskin YouTube Videos).
A Hold a Sentence video is now also available on the Ruth Miskin YouTube Channel. There are two sentences to choose from. If your child is learning set 2 sounds, please choose Hold a Sentence 1. If your child is learning set 3 sounds, please choose Hold a Sentence 2. We recommend that you complete this activity twice a week.
Maths
In maths, we will spend the week focusing on a particular topic e.g. shape or place value. Activities will then be set on Mathletics that are based upon this subject.
Topic – Fractions
- Find half of a shape
- Find half of an amount
