Text – newspaper article: Victory in Europe
Comprehension
Grammar focus – Modal verbs
Modal verbs have many uses. In most cases, they work with a verb to indicate the possibility of something happening, or to describe to what degree of certainty something is known. They can also express an obligation for someone to do something, or an ability to perform an action. Modal verbs are very important in newspaper articles, as the journalist will often speculate on what might or could happen next…

Writing task
This week, you need to write a newspaper article about England coming out of lockdown, and all shops etc being open again. Include information about what could happen if the R rate increases again, as well as talking to people about how they’re feeling. Remember, newspaper articles are there to inform, and so while your content will include some elements of both fiction and non-fiction, the writing should include lots of detail.
What I’m Looking For:
- The 5 W’s (Who? What? Where? When? Why?)
- A catchy headline
- A sentence at the start to sum up the article as a whole
- Modal verbs to suggest what could happen next (or what has already happened!)
- A quote from somebody who has strong feelings about the end of lockdown
