Large Shelter Building

Year 6 are getting back into the swing of their Forest School sessions, they made the most of the Autumn weather to build some amazing shelters. Apart from the sheer creativity of the task, natural den building benefits the children in many ways.

This week the dens had to be free-standing, use only natural materials (including any fastenings) and be big enough to fit the whole team inside. As a problem solving exercise it is very challenging. The children make it look easy but a large proportion of the session is spent in trial and error, lots of failures take place before a basic form is created on which to build. They must predict outcomes, estimate materials and constantly assess for potential risk. This must be carried out whilst trying to adapt to a team of different personalities, employing positive communication strategies and managing personal emotions is vital. Pressure is then added by having a limited timeframe in which to complete the task.  They rose to the challenge and proved to be resilient to most obstacles in their way.

Particularly in difficult times, being able to adapt to a situation quickly can help to minimise stress levels and create a more productive and comfortable environment. By showing children to trust their own abilities and reactions to situations helps them to have confidence in other areas of their lives. Learning that failures can bring us closer to success is an important awareness to develop.
