Friday 16th October is World Food Day. World Food Day is a day of action against hunger because when it comes to hunger, the only acceptable number in the world is zero. World Food Day celebrates the creation of the Food and Agriculture Organisations of the United Nations. As Harlow Green is Silver Awarded Rights Respecting School, we are looking to support this event by raising food donations for the People’s Kitchen in Newcastle.
People’s Kitchen is a charity ran organisation which started its work in 1985. Their mission is to support homeless and disadvantaged people in the Newcastle area. On average they provide 40,000 hot meals every year to their Friends who struggle to afford everyday essentials, like a hot meal. Hot food, clean clothes and warm bedding are a lifeline to their most vulnerable visitors, many of whom suffer from mental illness, physical disability, drug and alcohol misuse, or are rough sleepers. People’s Kitchen rely heavily on food donations, and without the help of both local and regional schools they would not be able to continue to produce the number of meals that they do.
During the current Covid-19 Pandemic, many people have lost jobs and become financially unstable. It is vital that we support our local community to access their rights to food and water. As a school we need your help to donate as much food as we can and will be collecting between Tuesday 13th October and Wednesday 21st October. People’s Kitchen are grateful for any donations they receive but are particularly in need of the following donations;
- Tinned Curry
- Tinned Chilli
- Tinned Meatballs
- Tinned Bolognese
- Tinned Burgers
- Tinned Potatoes
- Cereal
- Long life UHT Milk
- Jars of Italian, Indian, Chinese cooking sauces
- Bottles/Cans of drinks
